Internet Site Stealing – otherwise known as Ripping
In the past years, I’ve seen lots of sites that have been ripped. Heck, even my site has been copied. But never have I seen more rips of a single site. Netymology has been ripped more than I can count. For those interested, you can also check out these previous posts 1, 2 & 3.And to top it all off, I just found out this very morning that they have been ripped once more, but this time in a way more great fashion than previous times…It seems that SAS has used Netymology‘s original design to create a worldwide site of their own. As you can see the similarities are overwhelming! The fact is that SAS is using this design for all their sites globally and at great extent.Alex, congratulations once more on your design. It obviously is the greatest hit to land in our industry…

I checked out both sites and I wouldn’t exactly say that the similarities are “overwhelming”. I don’t think there’s a legitimate claim here that “SAS ripped Netymology”. They do have some similar elements. But just take a look at all business intelligence companies. Almost all their web sites look the same.

How can that not be overwhelming?I appreciate that the organisation of the content is quite different, but the navigation bar is practically identical in terms of presentation and proportion. It is certainly completely unoriginal, whether or not its a verbatim copy.If Netymology manufactured cars, SAS would be guilty of stealing not only the steering wheel, but the entire dashboard too, albeit they rearranged a couple of the buttons and lit it in blue instead of the Netymology grey, but it’s still theft.I wonder how BMW might react if Lexus did the same?
